Enriqe's Journey not only tells the story of his travel to the US/Mexico border but also the relationship between him and his mother.
The trip north is a life and death challenge. On foot or on the tops of trains he took his chances. He didn't know who was more dangerous, the gangs, police forces, yes forces, or some of the citizens. And he "met" them all.
Enrique and his sister grew up with relatives. Their father wasn't really in the picture. Their Mother didn't even say good by to 5 year old Enrique. He grew up wondering if his mother loved him.
I won't spoil the ending. It is a complicated decision she made.

No, money isn't more important. maybe she could have left in a better way rather then just leaving without saying goodbye. I would argue though that her going to America wasn't out of a love for money and wanting to get rich in a rich nation, i would hope that her motivation was to make money not available in honduras, and send it back to provide for her kids. I don't think money was more important to her than love, but she may had seen her only opportunity to give her kids a chance out of poverty was to leave and go where she can make money. of course, i havent read the book so i dont really know what any motives for any of the characters are, i would just guess that that would be the case, since its a common decision made in real life.
You are correct. She left to provide a better life for her kids. She did not leave for love of money. Just provision for her kids. However the kids would much rather have had their mom there than anything she could provide. There are lies and despair. And I think the most unfortunate result is that the pattern continues. It does help the Honduras economy but nothing improves in the long run.
It is a sad reality of life. And a lot of "if only's".
