Pride. the man was an intellectual and a politician and in my experience that kind of personality type is not wanting for an ego and pride.
He calls it something like an angel of Satan sent to torment him: My opinion is that Paul couldn't forget all the people that he persecuted even after being forgiven.
Based on my current personal expereience, it was an 8-week old daughter who won't go to sleep until after 2am.
And I can relate to that.
